Michael Opens-up About His Alcoholism
During an early morning chat, Michael opened-up to Rula about
his battle against the bottle today.
As the pair pottered around the kitchen at around 8am this
morning, Rula first asked Michael how close he was to his
The troubled comedian said that he misses the unconditional
love you get from them, and revealed that his drinking problems
started when his father-in-law died.
"That's when I started to lose it," he said, having
been very close to his ex-wife Cheryl's dad, Eddie.
"Did you need to be told that you had a problem, or
did you realise yourself?" quizzed Rula, prompting a
concise response: "People hint".
About being an alcoholic, Michael insisted that it's a progressive
disease and mentioned the late George Best, saying about the
legendary football player, "He couldn't help himself".
"Every alcoholic would like to just have a glass of
wine, but one's too many and a thousand isn't enough,"
Mike went on to say that he would regularly go for a drink
in the bar after shows, but when everybody else left he would
stay-on and drink on his own.
