Well, what do you know? Grown men, reduced to tears for the
second time since E.T. the Extra Terrestrial!
Of course we're referring to Davina McCall's farewell tribute
film, shown at the end of 'Big Brother: The Final Hour' last
night, the last-ever footage of Big Brother UK on Channel
The bit that got us was the clip of Davina at the Big Brother
5 Launch, saying to camera: "It's good to be back".
It came to mind that after tens years hosting the show, she
won't ever be saying that again, which was an incredibly profound
Davina has taken plenty of flak over the years; for not thinking
on her feet enough during interviews, for not asking evictees
the really difficult questions, for being almost too excitable
and even for shouting too much as a result of that excitement.
Here at BBO, we admit that we've bought into the criticism
at times, and we freely admit that we didn't enjoy Davina's
captaincy of 'Big Mouth' in recent years.
So, along with many other fans, prior to last night's Ultimate
Big Brother Finale we'd been thinking about who could replace
the 42-year-old brunette if the show was to move to another
Channel, as per the rumours.
However – and feel free to call us sycophants (hypocrites,
even) if you wish – The Final Hour VT made us realise
that for all her faults, Davina McCall IS Big Brother.
There is no other, and no-one could possibly replace her.
